State Farm fine and AI citation errors
Check the authorities before the filing leaves your desk
Reuters reports that a California judge ordered Jacquelene Robinson of Musick, Peeler & Garrett, acting for State Farm, to pay a $999.99 fine after filings included seven nonexistent case citations arising from her use of an AI program.
The insurance coverage suit was filed in 2024 and concerned fire and storm damage at a house in Carson, California.
According to Reuters, the plaintiff’s lawyers said they discovered the citation errors. Robinson apologised in a court filing and said she took full responsibility.
I’d start with the next filing on my desk. Before it goes out, I’d want a named colleague to have read the authorities and checked what we’re asking the court to accept.
