What is the legal services AI Growth Lab?

The legal services advisory AI Growth Lab is a government sandbox that gives innovators and adopters of AI coordinated access to regulators, according to the government's overview page, updated 23 October 2026. The page says this helps them understand how current regulation applies to new technology. Legal services is the sandbox's first focus.

Which regulators are involved in the AI Growth Lab?

The government's overview page says the lab is delivered through collaboration between government and regulators. The four regulators it lists are the Council for Licensed Conveyancers, the Information Commission (still known as the ICO), the Legal Services Board and the Solicitors Regulation Authority. It also lists the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade and the Ministry of Justice.

When will the AI Growth Lab start?

The Legal Services Board expects the lab to launch in December 2026. Its chief executive's progress report to the LSB board meeting of 22 October 2026 says applications closed on 27 September and submissions are now being reviewed to decide which suppliers will go on to test their products. It says decisions will be made during November.

Could law firms apply to the AI Growth Lab?

Law firms, legal professionals and alternative business structures were among the organisations invited to apply, according to the government's overview page. It also lists lawtech companies, conveyancing firms, AI developers and public sector organisations. The SRA's announcement of 5 August 2026 gave a similar list. Applications closed on 27 September 2026, so the lab is not taking new applications.

Does taking part mean a regulator has approved an AI tool?

The government's overview page says participation does not provide regulatory approval, endorsement or exemptions from legal obligations, and that organisations remain responsible for complying with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements. The LSB made the same point about regulatory approval and endorsement when the lab was announced on 8 June 2026.

What else is the LSB doing on AI?

The same 22 October 2026 progress report says fieldwork for the LSB's Use of Technology and Innovation Survey is under way and will conclude by December, with results expected in spring 2027. It also says the LSB is taking steps towards further research into consumer harms arising from AI use.

Margo Legal is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. This page summarises the government's, the LSB's and the SRA's own published material as at 29 October 2026.
